Window 1 (rectors)

Alar Karis (left) (PhD in Veterinary Medicine, 1987) was the Rector of the University of Tartu from 2007–2012. He had previously held the post of the Rector of Estonian University of Life Sciences from 2003–2007, was the Auditor General of Estonia from 2013–2018 and is the Director of the Estonian National Museum since 2018. For a long time, he was a professor of developmental biology at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Tartu. His main research focus is developmental biology, molecular genetics and transgenic technology. In 2007 he was awarded the Order of the White Star, 4th class. – CV

Professor Toomas Asser (middle) (PhD in Medicine, 1987) was inaugurated as the Rector of the University of Tartu in August 2018. He is Professor of Neurosurgery and before assuming office as the Rector he was Head of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Tartu, 1996–2018. In his research he focused on cerebrovascular diseases and their surgical treatment, the pathomorphology and epidemiology of brain tumours, and functional magnetic resonance tomography. He has been a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences since 2011. – CV | see also

Jaak Aaviksoo (right) (PhD in Physics and Mathematics, 1982) was the Rector of the University of Tartu from 1998–2007, Vice Rector 1992–1995 and Head of the Institute of Experimental Physics and Technology 1996–1998. From 1992–2015 he was a professor of optics and spectroscopy at the University of Tartu and was granted the title Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Science and Technology in 2017. He has been a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences since 1994. He has formerly served as a member of the Parliament of Estonia, Minister of Education and Minister of Defence. Currently he is the Rector of Tallinn University of Technology. In 2000 he was awarded the Order of the National Coat of Arms, 4th class, and in 2006 the Order of the White Star, 4th class. – see also

Priit Kaasik (upper left) (PhD in Exercise and Sports Sciences, 2004) is Head of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy of the University of Tartu, and Professor in Functional Morphology. His research mainly focuses on skeletal muscle tissue, including the effect of loading, and sarcopenia and muscle weakness in the elderly. He has also studied the physical activity of schoolchildren. He is a member of the Federation of European Physiological Societies and the Baltic Laboratory Animal Science Association, and a board member of the Estonian Olympic Academy. – CV

Urmas Lepner (upper rigth) (PhD in Medicine, 1986) is Vice Dean for Residency in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tartu, Head of the Surgery Clinic at Tartu University Hospital and Head of the Department of Surgery at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of the University of Tartu, and Professor in Surgery. His main fields of research are emergency surgery, endocrine surgery, hernia surgery, vascular surgery. He also supervises the general surgery residency programme. He is a board member of the Estonian Association of Surgeons and a member of the Speciality Committee of General Surgery at the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Estonia. In 2015 he was awarded the Order of the Estonian Red Cross, 2nd class. – CV

Ana Rebane (lower left) (PhD in Molecular Biology, 1999) is Senior Research Fellow in RNA Biology and Head of the RNA Biology Research Group at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine of the University of Tartu. Her current research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of chronic inflammation. She is a member of the board of reviewers of the top-level Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and a member of several scientific and professional associations. In 2015 she received the Eastern European Dermatology Research Award which is issued by the European Society of Dermatological Research. – CV

Ain Raal (lower right) (PhD in Pharmacy, 1989) is Head of the Institute of Pharmacy and Professor in Pharmacognosy at the University of Tartu. As researcher, he is committed to pharmacy, pharmacognosy and phytochemistry: he has published several hundred scientific articles and 27 books, including a pharmacognosy textbook for university students and the award-winning world encyclopaedia of medicinal plants. He is an expert for the World Health Organisation and member of the Expert Commission of Estonian Pharmaceutical Terminology. He has received the Best Teacher award and is recognised for outstanding science communication. – CV

Margit Sutrop (upper left) (PhD in Philosophy, 1997) is Head of the Centre for Ethics, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Practical Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics of the University of Tartu. Her main research areas are moral philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of education, bioethics, business ethics and aesthetics. She is a member of the international Academia Europaea, expert on ethics for the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, member of the Estonian Council on Bioethics, member of the ethics committee and the council of ethics of the North Estonia Medical Centre, as well as a prolific author of scientific and opinion articles. In 2010 she was awarded the Order of the White Star, 4th class. – CV

Raul Eamets (upper right) (PhD in Economics, 2001) is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Tartu and Professor of Macroeconomics. His research focuses on various labour market issues, including structural changes in the labour market, migration topics and relationships between the labour market and the education system, as well as labour market flexibility, gender pay gap and productivity. Eamets has written numerous publications and opinion articles, and he is a member of several councils and professional associations, and the chairman of the Fiscal Council, an independent body assessing the fiscal policy of the Republic of Estonia. – CV

Peeter Burk (lower left) (PhD in Chemistry, 1994) is the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and Professor of Chemical Physics at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Tartu. His research focuses are chemical equilibria and kinetics, nanoparticle modelling and separation of lanthanides. He was for nearly ten years the Vice President of the Estonian Chemical Society and is a member of the Science Council of the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics. In 1997 he received the national research award. – CV

Margus Lember (lower right) (PhD in Medicine, 1990 and 1998) is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tartu, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Tartu University Hospital and the Institute of Clinical Medicine of the University of Tartu, and Professor of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine. His research focuses are chronic diseases, healthcare reforms, diagnostics methods and medical education. He is a member of the Council of the European Federation of Internal Medicine and an expert for the World Health Organization and the World Bank. He received the national research award in 1995. – CV

Elmo Tempel (upper left) (PhD in astrophysics, 2011) is Head of the Galaxy Physics and Cosmology Department and Professor of Astronomy at Tartu Observatory of the University of Tartu. His main field of research is galaxy evolution in the cosmic web and he focuses on the application of mathematical methods on cosmological observation data. He is a founding member of the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences and a team leader in the European Southern Observatory’s project 4MOST. He received the Young Scientist Award of the Cultural Foundation of the President of Estonia in 2013, and the national research award in 2017. – CV

Koit Herodes (upper right) (PhD in Physical and Analytical Chemistry, 2002) is Associate Professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry and Head of the Testing Centre of the University of Tartu. As a researcher he is committed to analytical chemistry and metrology, primarily chromatographic and mass-spectrometric methods, and validation of analytical methods. He has participated in many research and development projects and has been a member of the council of the University of Tartu’s Institute of Chemistry for more than ten years. In 2014 he received the research award of Tartu University Hospital. – CV

Reet Kurg (lower left) (PhD in Molecular Biology, 2000) is Director of the Institute of Technology, Head of the Core Facility for Applied Virology, and Senior Research Fellow in Gene Technology at the University of Tartu. Her main research area is biomedicine, primarily the characterisation of cancer antigens and development of new drug candidates. She is the author of patented invention and has written numerous publications. – CV

Mari Moora (lower right) (PhD in Ecology and Ecophysiology, 1998) is the Vice Dean for Research and Development of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and Senior Research Fellow in Plant Ecology at the Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences of the University of Tartu. She has published more than one hundred publications on biodiversity, biotic interactions and community ecology. She is a member of the Plant Ecology Laboratory of the University of Tartu, has received two national research awards of the Republic of Estonia, and is one of the world’s most highly cited researchers in her field of research. – CV

Tambet Teesalu (upper left) (PhD in Developmental Biology, 1999) is Professor of Nanomedicine at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine of the University of Tartu, and Visiting Professor at the Cancer Center of Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (USA) and at the Center for Nanomedicine at the University of California Santa Barbara (USA). His research interests include the genesis, progression and treatment of cancers. He is the founder and board member of DrugCendR Inc. and a member of the American Association for Cancer Research. In 2017 he received the national research award of the Republic of Estonia. – CV

Helle Karro (upper right) (PhD in Medicine, 1999) is Head of the Women’s Clinic of Tartu University Hospital and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Tartu. Her research is focused on reproductive and sexual health, infertility, sexual behaviour, gynaecological diseases, and perinatal epidemiology. She is the founder of the Estonian Sexual Health Association, board member and former president of the Estonian Gynaecologists’ Society, and member of the Council of Clinical Quality Indicators of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. In 2019 she was awarded the Order of the Estonian Red Cross, 2nd class. – CV

Anneli Uusküla (lower left) (PhD in Medicine, 2001) is Professor of Epidemiology at the Institute of Family Medicine and Public Health of the University of Tartu, and a teaching doctor in the Dermatology Clinic of Tartu University Hospital. Her fields of research are public health and clinical medicine. She is an editor of the journals Estonian Physician and BMC Infectious Diseases, and an expert for the Estonian Agency of Medicines, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the European Medicines Agency. – CV

Mare Saag (lower right) (PhD in Medicine, 1991) is Professor of Oral and Dental Diseases at the Institute of Dentistry of the University of Tartu, and a dentist for OÜ Stoma-Hambaravi. Her fields of research include the epidemiology, risk factors and prevention of dental caries, malocclusion, and periodontal disease. She is a member of the council and the board of Estonian Dental Association, and a member of the International Association for Dental Research. She is also a member of the editorial board of several professional scientific journals. – CV

Krista Fischer (upper left) (PhD in Mathematical Statistics, 1999) is Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, and Senior Research Fellow of Biostatistics at the Estonian Genome Centre Science Centre of the Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu. Her main research areas are biostatistics and medical statistics, incl. causal inference and multilevel linear models in medical statistics. She is a member of the executive board of the International Biometric Society (IBS) and a founding member of the Baltic Group of IBS. From 2013–2016 she was President of the Nordic-Baltic Region of the International Biometric Society. She is a highly cited researcher ranking among the 6,000 most highly cited scientists in the world. – CV

Markus Vetemaa (upper right) (PhD in Biology, 1998) is Director of the Estonian Marine Institute, Head of the Department of Fish Biology and Fisheries, and Senior Research Fellow in Ichthyology and Fisheries Science at the University of Tartu. His research focuses are reproductive biology of fish, fish predators and fisheries. He is a delegate to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, an expert for the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, and a member of the European Association of Fisheries Economists. In 2016 he was awarded the Silver Badge of Merit of the Estonian Ministry of Rural Affairs. He has published three novels. – CV

Mark Fišel (lower left) (PhD in Computer Science, 2011) is Head of the Chair of Natural Language Processing and Professor of Natural Language Processing at the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Tartu. His research is focused on introducing and developing machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. Together with his students he has developed the Neurotõlge machine translation software, which uses artificial neural networks-based methods to guarantee optimal translation quality. He has published numerous scientific articles and in 2018 he received the Young IT Scientist award of the Cultural Foundation of the President of Estonia. – CV

Heikki Junninen (middle) (PhD in Physics, 2014) is Senior Research Fellow in Atmospheric Physics and Professor of Environmental Physics at the Institute of Physics of the University of Tartu. As a researcher at the University of Helsinki and the University of Tartu he has focused on the physico-chemical characteristics of atmosphere, studied atmospheric nanoparticles and developed mass spectrometric methods. He has led the atmospheric mass spectrometry research group since 2017. He ranks in the world’s top 1% of most highly cited researchers of the last decade in his field. – CV

Maia Kivisaar (lower right) (PhD in Molecular Biology, 1992) is Head of the Chair of Genetics and Professor of Microbial Genetics at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology of the University of Tartu. Her main field of research is mutational processes in bacteria but she has also studied, for example, phenol degradation genes. She has published numerous research articles and is a long-term editor of Applied and Environmental Microbiology. In 2005 she received the national research award in the field of chemistry and molecular biology. – CV

Mihkel Solvak (upper left) (PhD in Political Science, 2011) is Head of Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, Senior Research Fellow in Technology Research at the University of Tartu, and a research team leader at the Center of IT Impact Studies. His research interests include the impact of information and communication technology on behaviour, and the usage patterns and spread of e-services, incl. internet voting. He is a member of the steering committee of the Estonian National Election Study since 2011 and a member of CERES, an organisation for European Researchers of Election Studies. – CV

Irene Kull (upper right) (PhD in Law, 2002) is Head of the Department of Private Law and Professor of Civil Law at the School of Law of the University of Tartu. Her field of research includes financial law, commercial law, law of obligations, contract law and private law. She is Chair of the Estonian Academic Law Society, a founding member of the Academy of European Private Law and the European Banking Institute, and a member of the editorial boards of the journals Juridica and Juridica International. She has also worked as an expert for the European Committee. – CV

Olga Burdakova (lower left) (PhD in Russian Language, 2008) is Associate Professor of Russian Language at Narva College of the University of Tartu. Her research interests are focused on the morphology of Russian verbs, but she has also written on didactics and urban anthropology. Since 2013 she has been one of the organisers of the annual seminar on the Estonian-Russian cultural relations “Esto-Russica” and since 2017, editor-in-chief of the popular scientific journal “Multilingual Education”. She has been named three times as the Best Teacher of Narva College. – CV

Äli Leijen (lower right) (PhD in Educational Sciences, 2008) is Head of the Institute of Education, Programme Director of the PhD programme in Educational Science, and Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Tartu. Her research is committed to promoting effective teaching and learning, incl. teachers’ professional development and the role of educational technology in supporting teaching and learning. She is a founding member of the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences and a member of several scientific organisations. She is also a member of the editorial board of the Estonian Journal of Education and the European Journal of Psychology of Education, and works as an expert for many international projects and decision-making bodies on educational issues in Estonia. – CV

Anu Realo (upper left) (PhD in Psychology, 1999) is Professor of Personality and Social Psychology at the University of Tartu, Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Warwick, and a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Her important research topics include individual variation in personality development, values, subjective well-being and social capital. She is the coordinator of the World Values Survey in Estonia, and President-Elect for the European Association for Personality Psychology. In 2016 she was awarded the Order of the White Star, 4th class. – CV

Halliki Harro-Loit (upper right) (PhD in Political Sciences, 2001) is Professor of Journalism at the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu. As a researcher, she has studied the history of journalism and communication, media law and education, and journalism and communication ethics. She has chaired the national programme “Value Development in the Estonian Society” since 2009. She is also a member of the editorial boards of international journals Journalism Practice and Digital Journalism. – CV

Kadri Ukrainski (lower left) (PhD in Economics, 2008) is Head of the School of Economics and Business Administration, Head of the Chair of Public Economics and Policy, and Professor in Research and Innovation Policy at the University of Tartu. Her main research focus is economic, research and innovation policy and she has participated in several relevant research projects. She is an expert of a Horizon 2020 Programme Committee, a member of the Estonian Economic Association since 2003, and a member of the Research Policy Committee at the Ministry of Education and Research since 2015. – CV

Heli Tooman (lower right) (PhD in Educational Sciences, 2003) is Associate Professor of Tourism Management at Pärnu College of the University of Tartu. She has studied and taught sustainable development, quality management, wellness and health tourism, and service philosophy and culture; compiled dictionaries and textbooks, and published a history book “100 Years of Estonian Tourism”. She is a member of the editorial boards of several scientific and professional journals, incl. the editorial board of the specialist travel magazine Reisimaailm since 2018. She has been awarded the highest decoration of the City of Pärnu and the title the Woman of the Year by Pärnu City Government, and the title of the Best Tourism Promoter by Estonian Travel and Tourism Association. – CV

Riho Altnurme (upper left) (PhD in Theology, 2000) is Vice Dean for Research of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Church History at the School of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Tartu. His research interests include society, state and churches in the contemporary history of Estonia, history of theology in Estonia, interconfessional relations and historiography of church history. He is a member of national and international research organisations, for example the International Commission for History and Studies of Christianity, and has chaired several international working groups. In the years 2003–2015 he was Dean of the Faculty of Theology. In 2002 he received the Rektor-von-Ewers-Preis, an award issued in Germany. – CV

Madis Arukask (upper right) (PhD in Estonian and Comparative Folklore, 2003) is Senior Research Fellow in Estonian and Comparative Folklore at the Institute of Cultural Research of the University of Tartu, Associate Professor of Estonian Language and Culture for Non-Estonians at the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, and Research Fellow of Cultural Studies at Viljandi Culture Academy. His research focuses on folk religion as well as Finnic languages and cultures. He translated the Vepsian epic Virantanaz into Estonian. He is a member of eight scientific organisations, Chair of the Board of NGO Fenno-Ugria, and President of the Estonian Society for the Study of Religions. In 2012 he received the Estonian annual folkloristics award. – CV

Raili Marling (lower left) (PhD in English Language and Literature, 2006) is Head of the Department of English Studies at the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of the University of Tartu, Programme Director, and Professor of English. Her research interests include gender and power in public discourse and contemporary literature, and critical affect studies. She is a member of the International Comparative Literature Association, the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies, and the Gender Equality Council established by the Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia. – CV

Liina Lindström (lower right) (PhD in Estonian Language, 2005) is Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Tartu, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow in Estonian Language at the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, and Head of the Centre for Digital Humanities and Information Society. Her research mainly focuses on syntax, dialects and language variation. She is a member of several research organisations, incl. the Estonian Society for Digital Humanities, and a member of the editorial board of Virittäjä, a scientific journal of the Society for the Study of Finnish. – CV

Anti Selart (upper left) (PhD in History, 2002) is Head of the Institute of History and Archaeology, and Professor of Medieval History at the University of Tartu. His research deals mainly with the history of Livonia in the Middle Ages and in the 16th century, as well as the church history of East and Northern Europe in the Late Middle Ages and the church history of the Crusades. He is a member of the Academic Historical Society and the Baltic History Commission. He is a recipient of the Rektor-von-Ewers-Preis, an award issued in Germany. The publication edited by Anti Selart, “History of Estonia II. Middle Ages” was chosen as the best history book in 2012. – CV

Pärtel Piirimäe (upper right) (PhD in History, 2007) is Professor of Intellectual History at the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics of the University of Tartu. His research interests include European and Estonian intellectual history, the history of social and moral thought, of international law, historiography and propaganda in the Early Modern Period. He was the editor-in-chief of “Ajalooline Ajakiri. The Estonian Historical Journal” for over ten years and is a member of the Baltic History Commission and the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies. – CV

Pärtel Lippus (lower left) (PhD in Estonian Language, 2011) is Senior Research Fellow in Estonian Phonetics at the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics of the University of Tartu. His main research focus is Estonian prosody, primarily the quantity and stress system. He also manages the University of Tartu’s phonetic corpus of Estonian spontaneous speech. He is a member of the International Speech Communication Association, council of the High-Performance Computing Centre of the University of Tartu, and the Estonian Society for Digital Humanities. In 2003 he received the folklore collection award of the Cultural Foundation of the President of Estonia. – CV

Anneli Saro (lower right) (PhD in Estonian Literature, 2004) is Professor of Theatre Science at the Institute of Cultural Research of the University of Tartu. In her research she focuses mainly on the history of the Estonian theatre, audience research and the sociology of theatre. She also writes theatre criticism and is the author of several textbooks. In 2004–2008 and since 2017 onwards she has chaired the international Project on European Theatre Systems (STEP) and held administrative positions, incl. as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of the University of Tartu in 2017–2018. – CV

Lea Leppik (upper left) (PhD in History, 2005) is Curator at the Museum, and Associate Professor in Legal History at the School of Law of the University of Tartu. From 2002–2018 she was the Research Director of the museum. She has had a long career teaching students as a lecturer and associate professor. Her research focuses on the history of science from early 19th century to mid-20th century. She has written numerous articles and is a member of several history-related councils and editorial boards. She has won many museum awards and prizes, and she has been nominated three times for the annual national prize in history-writing. – CV

Malle Ermel (upper right) (History, 1974) is Head of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Library of the University of Tartu. During her long career she has held various positions at the library: Director, Head of Human Resources, Research Secretary, Researcher, Librarian and Adviser. She has written dozens of articles on librarianship and is currently compiling the history of the University of Tartu Library. In 2007 she was awarded the Order of the White Star, 5th class. – CV

Lili Milani (lower left) (PhD in Molecular Medicine, 2009) is Assistant Director of the Institute of Genomics, Head of Science Centre of the Estonian Genome Centre, and Research Professor of Epigenomics and Pharmacogenomics at the University of Tartu. Her main fields of research include epigenetics, pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine: she has researched genetic variations and the effect of genes on drug response. She is an associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Genetics, a member of the Chancellor of Justice’s Advisory Committee on Human Rights. She has received the Young Scientist Award of the Cultural Foundation of the President of Estonia and the national research award. – CV

Urmas Kõljalg (middle) (PhD in Botany, 1996) is Director and Project Manager of the Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden, Head of the Chair of Mycology, and Professor of Mycology at the Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences of the University of Tartu. He has mainly studied fungi and mycorrhizae, and is engaged in biodiversity informatics. He is a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and a highly cited researcher ranking among the world’s 6,000 most cited scientists in his field. He has been awarded the Order of the White Star, 5th class, and the national research award of the Republic of Estonia. – CV

Riin Tamm (lower right) (PhD in Molecular Diagnostics, 2017) is Director of the Youth Academy at the University of Tartu. Her research focuses on the variability in human genome associated with diseases, the genetics of ageing and longevity, and pharmacogenetics. She is a recognised science communicator: a co-host of a radio science programme and a judge in the TV science programme Rakett 69 since 2014. She is a member the Estonian Biochemical Society, the Estonian Society of Human Genetics, council member of Ahhaa Science Centre and board member of TeaMe+ science communication programme. – CV
